Black Lives Matter
As a woman of color it probably comes as no surprise that I support the Black Lives Matter movement. I don't want to get too political on this site but I do wish to point out that too many of our brothers and sisters have lost their lives to the carelessness of law enforcement. I could detail my reasons for my outrage but I'm pretty sure there isn't enough space or time in the day to say it all. Suffice it to say that I am fed up. I would also like to point out that there are any number of people that are not of color that are very sympathetic to this cause and have actively sought to support the black and brown communities by putting themselves in harm's way to make their point. I ask that more of you please take up this cause not just because it's the right thing to do but because it's been a long time coming. 400 years ago slavery started and still having brown skin carries a stigma that we neither earned nor deserve. Much like every other group of people, there are good and bad members. To assume that one group of people is all good or bad based on the color of their skin is false and ignorant.
Stand with us so that not only will people of color finally get the respect we deserve but also because this isn't just about racism. It's about police brutality. The men and women in blue don't currently have a reliable system for accountability but they need to have one. There needs to be a way for people to seek and receive justice when a police officer oversteps and harms or even kills a citizen. We need to find a better way. I don't have all the answers for how we can achieve that but we need to start the dialogue and be willing to explore all options in order to create the kind of community where we can all feel safe.
